What is a Broadcast Camera Operator?

A broadcast camera operator is responsible for framing shots during a live broadcast. They may operate the camera either handheld or on a tripod (also called “hard” or “on sticks”). The style of operation depends on what the director of the show requires. Typically, you’ll have at least one camera on a tripod and handheld cameras are used as supplemental shots.

The camera operator is responsible for making sure they are building their camera correctly and that everything is functional on their end. They will then check with the Technical Director and V1 that all communications between the switcher and the camera is working (such as tallies, shading, and program returns). This is typically called a Fax (or “facilities check”). During the live broadcast, typically, all iris and color controls are handled by a V1 remotely from the studio or truck. The camera operator is solely concerned with what the director is asking for framing-wise.
